Chemistry professors help 2018 grad achieve grad school dreams

Chemistry major Cleo Evans (class of 2018) is headed to Vanderbilt University to earn a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. Cleo credits her chemistry professors with helping her apply for her current job at Peach State Labs and the graduate school application process. She also credits Berry with helping her make great connections through the student work program. Cleo worked as Dr. Martha Tapia’s math contest student assistant, helping her write tests for competitions and keeping up with paperwork for competing schools. In addition, Cleo was the president of Berry’s chapter of the American Chemical Society, and she continually devoted time doing chemistry demos for the Berry and Rome, Ga., communities.

Campus Jobs and Corporate Internship Launch Berry Senior

In September of Andie Spearman’s senior year, nine months before graduation, her career was ready for launch.

The summer after her junior year, Andie, a marketing major from Atlanta, had a marketing and sales internship at Georgia-Pacific. Before her internship ended, she received an impressive job offer. After she walks across the graduation stage in May, she’ll become a business associate in the organization’s “Jump Start” program which will prepare her for a career with one of Georgia’s most prestigious companies. How did success come so readily to Andie? “My experience with the Enterprise Program on campus taught me so much,” said Andie. “I learned that any idea can flourish.” The program, which encompasses 15 different student enterprises on campus, offers real-world experience to students. As the director, she leads other students in everything from developing marketing campaigns and implementing strategies to community engagement and reaching revenue goals. What has been the highlight of her enterprise experience? “Seeing other people find their joy.” As a Gate of Opportunity Scholar, she is a member of another campus team that plans orientation for incoming scholars – another challenge she enjoys. Her favorite classes on campus also have a practical twist. In her Marketing Communications class, she worked with a nonprofit in the Rome area. Her Brand and Product Management class was built on examples from the real world.

Andie credits her two program supervisors for guiding her through her four years. “They’ve known me since day one, and we just do life together,” Andie said. How did Berry change her? “I’ve always been a hard worker, but Berry cultivated and helped me apply my talents. I faced some real challenges and have worked on things that haven’t come easily. I became the person I was meant to be at Berry.”

Jennifer Wayman takes hard work to the next level

In her four years at Berry, senior Jennifer Wayman has worked as a veterinary assistant and research assistant as well as held positions at the horse barn, beef cattle unit, and the Berry student enterprises. “I have been able to invest myself in my on-campus jobs and develop quality relationships,” says Jennifer, an Animal Science/ Pre-Vet major. “Berry has prepared me with a pretty impressive resume. I feel like the experiences and opportunities I have gotten at Berry would not have been offered to me at other schools.” Berry’s firsthand experience also benefited Jennifer when she interned with the Georgia Department of Agriculture last summer. “I was able to experience veterinary medicine on a much larger scale,” she says. After graduating this spring, Jennifer plans on applying to veterinary school.

Elizabeth Anthony combines veterinary and military dreams

Combining her love of animals and a family military tradition, Elizabeth Anthony (16C) is on her way to her dream job with the Army Veterinary Corps. While at Berry, the 2016 graduate double majored in animal science and biochemistry, immersing herself in the culture of animal care and demanding academic rigor that Berry is known for. She spent much of her time working at the Rollins Dairy caring for large animals and learning how to manage people. Berry’s demanding classes, along with two internships whipped her into shape and helped her gain acceptance into the Army’s Health Professions Scholarship Program where she’s one of 30 individuals nationwide. Thanks to the scholarship, Elizabeth is now a student in the University of Florida’s veterinary program and has been sworn into the Army as a second lieutenant. Her advice to current Berry students is, “If you know there’s something you want in life, no excuses, no procrastination. Attack it, get it done and be proud of doing your best regardless of the results.”

2014 grad finds true path working at Mount Vernon

Haley Fortune (14C) has found her true path working at George Washington’s historic home, Mount Vernon. Haley always wanted to work in museums and when she learned Berry had a museum and archive on campus, she was sold! By participating in Berry’s premier Work Experience Program she worked at the Oak Hill and Martha Berry Museum and the Martha Berry Digital Archives. This passion for curating the past led her to graduate from Berry with a degree in history before going on to study visual arts management and curating at Richmond, the American International University in London. After graduating with her masters, she worked in museums in London and Washington D.C.

Now at Mount Vernon she has the opportunity to share her passion with others by working in historical interpretation and youth and family programs. Haley credits much of her success to her time at Berry: “Not only does Berry help its students gain experience through the work program, but Berry also offers a very well-rounded liberal arts education, which is so important in this new world where a diverse skill set is what sets you apart.”

Economics grad succeeds in healthcare

Sam Jones (16C) has a knack for numbers. As a Gate of Opportunity Scholar working his way through Berry, he found application for his aptitude through one-on-one interaction with his economics professors and extensive participation in the on-campus Work Experience Program.
